Why are there train strikes?

If you remember, the rail strikes began in June earlier this year when the sun was piping hot, and we were not worried about insulating our homes. The largest incident of industrial action since 1989 began after RMT (the rail union) walked out over wages and planned redundancies.

Fast forward to today, two Prime Ministers later, the issue is still ongoing, with more strikes planned in January 2023. A deal between the government and union bosses has yet to be achieved. Our most recent leader Rishi Sunak has maintained a firm stance and will not budge on negotiations for pay stating the government had been  “fair and reasonable”.

Mick Lynch, General Secretary of RMT, claimed that the government's changes would cut jobs and force staff to work more weekends and nights. 

The result of this standoff between unions and the government has been a disruption to ordinary people's lives. With nurses set to strike if they are not given a pay rise in line with inflation, the government is under pressure from various sectors to respect their rights.
